Homo sapiens, Man, is the most insidious and most destructive
predator of penguins. Collectively, governments, industry and individuals
have done more to deplete the populations of penguins than any other
natural destructive force in nature has. Fortunately, we are taking the
effort to reverse this trend.
From penguin slaughter in the 1800s to oil spills in the 1990s,
Man has pretty much done it all. Despite all the indirect and direct
impact Man has had on penguins, some good has come out. All 17 species
of penguins are protected by government treaties. All governments that
demonstrate claim in Antarctica protect endemic species there.
